米耀荣(Yiu-Wing Mai)教授是国际断裂力学和复合材料力学领域的主要学术带头人之一,是澳大利亚技术科学和工程院院士、英国皇家工程院外籍院士、澳大利亚科学院院士、英国皇家学会院士、欧洲科学院院士和中国工程院外籍院士。他提出了基本断裂功新理论,揭示了弹塑性材料断裂韧性的本质;发现了裂纹尾迹桥联新现象并阐明了其增韧机理及普适性;创立了基于统计理论力学模型的含缺陷单根纤维复合材料断裂实验方法,提出了缝合、销钉复合材料层合板的断裂分析模型。成果应用于美国标准ASTM E-1290-93、欧洲结构完整性协会技术委员会韧性聚合物薄膜的“基本断裂功测试规程”。米教授为中国培养了20名博士,联合培养15名博士,指导44名博士后,热心接受40余名来自中国的访问教授/学者到悉尼大学工作,对中国人才培养做出了卓越贡献。积极为中国学者搭建国际交流合作的桥梁、推进重要国际会议走进中国、积极推荐中国学者在国际刊物担任主编和编委,促进了中国科技的国际化。他还担任了中国公司高级顾问、建立院士工作站和海智工作站、获湖北省人民政府“编钟奖”,为中国经济建设作出了重要贡献。
